There was definately a place for him.

Firstly he is on a brand with a paper thin roster.  He wasn't surplus to requirements.  It's also the "Wrestling" brand.  Made famous over the years by guys like Finlay, Benoit, Chavo, WGTT, Angle etc.  His match with Ziggler a few PPVs back was great.  True he didn't have the size or personality they like, but he was great as an in-ring talent.  Maybe the mutual decision means he wasn't happy with just being a jobber (Chavo clearly doesn't mind), I always thought this would eventually lead somewhere, I mean remember how much Bryan was jobbed out, look at him now?
