Joey Mercury
« on: February 01, 2010, 07:45:27 pm »
Former MNM tag-team member and former Champion Joey Mercury is set to return to World Wrestling Entertainment, according to PWInsider.com.

Mercury was released by the company in 2007 and retired in 2008, reportedly due to injury issues. He is slated to be on SmackDown, which is where his former tag-team partner John Morrison is also.

 :headbanger:

Great stuff.  The dude is uber talented, they paired him with Morrison back in the day because back then Morrison was a medicore wrestler who needed carrying, word was he called most of their matches in the ring and picked up the slack, shame drug issues got the better of him.  Hopefully its all good now!

No because the headline would have read....

"Former KOTR, IC, ****, Multiple Time Tag Team Champion and all round Legend" returns to the company.

Plus I'd of read it on his facebook first.

-- One idea currently being discussed by the WWE creative team is to have Joey Mercury return on the SmackDown brand as part of CM Punk's Straight-Edge Society. Mercury was released in 2007 and it is well documented that he had a pain killer addiction, so the angle would likely be played off from this. [Source: Mike Aldren]

Quality!  Book it!

And this is how he may look after he gives himself to "Straight Edge"

I like the idea of putting him in the Straight Edge Society. He deserves to be somewhat relevant when he returns.

A short feud with JoMo would be nice to, trying to convince him to join Straight Edge.

Joey Mercury (Matthews) made his WWE return last night in the dark match before the NXT and SmackDown tapings in Uncasville, CT. Mercury lost to Shelton Benjamin.

Mercury was re-signed by WWE at the end of 2009. He is expected to appear on SmackDown soon.

It’s being rumored that Joey Mercury will join CM Punk’s Straight Edge Society but that’s not confirmed. Mercury told people last year when WWE re-signed him that the plan was for him to join the group. In addition to Mercury now sporting a shaved head, he’s wearing jean shorts similar to John Cena.

Regarding Mercury’s dark match this past week, he wasn’t even suited up to wrestle when they told him just a few minutes before the match that he had to perform. This may explain the jean shorts look.

Joey Mercury  will be out of action for several months after undergoing surgery over the weekend to repair a torn pectoral muscle. It?s considered a six month recovery process.

Despite the injury, Mercury is expected to remain on television since he had his arm on Monday?s Raw just days after surgery. Many feel that with Serena?s recent release, it wasn?t a good time to remove Mercury from television since the Straight Edge Society wouldn?t be much of a group with two people.

Feel really sorry for the guy, such a talented worker who's had to battle his demons, made worse by his injury problems.  I remember he got over his first drug addiction until "The Ladder Match" injury which had him ending up hooked on painkillers again.  Now he has sorted himself out, hopefully this injury doesn't lead to him going backwards again.
