I voted '97 and '98.

"Stone Cold vs. Kurt Angle" should have been the 2001 Main Event.

"Kurt Angle vs. Brock Lesnar" should have been the 2003 Main Event.

ah Summerslam 2000 - Triple H attempted to pedigree Kurt Angle through the announcer table - table collapsed unexpectedly and poor Kurt was left semi concious - Triple H and the Rock then proceeded to improvise what rather quickly became a one on one match...

That was me.

....hear me out, the first time I watched a tape of Summerslam '94 I was 6 or 7 so that angle was mindblowing for me at that age. Don't get me wrong the match itself is terrible and one huge squash but after watching it last year it brought back those childhood kayfabe memories.  :D

...such a shame that Bret vs Owen cage match wasn't main-event. Always loved that match, what great chemistry.

Fair play....but still  :P

Its a good thing this is only Main Events because there are so many quality down the card matches to choose from I'd find it near impossible...

Shawn Michaels vs. Razor Ramon Ladder Match II in 1995.

Shawn Michaels vs. Triple H in 2002.

The Cage match you mentioned.

Savage vs. Warrior in '92 is extremely underated as well.

The first two without question. They were major global pop culture events, especially the first. Even your friend's great grandma knew who the Megapowers and Megabucks were. Not really a good match, but the spectacle of it was unreal.

No one alive then will ever forget when Zeus attacked Hogan at Saturday Night's Main Event leading up to Summerslam. I hated the Zeus angle even back then. He wasn't really a wrestler, it showed, and it got stale awfully quick.

None of the events that followed these two came close to the same stature.

That Sgt. Slaughter worshiping Iraq angle was horrific.

IT shows how people pick things based on different aspects, you picked 2 things based on how big they were at the time, the as you said "spectacle" of it.  For people like myself who didn't experience it then, to look back you just see two medicore main events, from a wrestling stand point anyway.

Hart vs Bulldog was Bret's break out match it put him on the map as a main event wrestler, and what so bad bout that match was Bulldog though it was his break out match. Sadly it was not his break out match and that match was the one that help make Bret Hart the best there the best is and the best there ever will be!

I heard in Bret's book (which I'm attempting to read soon) he says Bulldog was off his face throughout that match with his drug problems and Bret had to call every spot and drag his ass through it.

I remembewr perfect vs hart. I'm sure the european fans on this site mightlike bulldog hart better but for me its perfect and bret that was the match

They are both very good matches but I do believe the Summerslam once was the first time Bret had Main Evented a PPV, and that was his break through to the top level so to speak.  I mean Perfect wasn't the only great match he'd had prior to this, his one with Piper was real good to, but when you are finally headlining a show, as scotta75 said..."It put him on the map as a Main Event wrestler"
