Why do you watch wrestling?
« on: January 10, 2010, 11:14:59 pm »
It dawned on me that I can be pretty critical of films for daft writing and poor acting - but happily sit through hours of wrestling each week...

Got me thinking why I like it, why do you like it?

For me it has to the the sheer absurdity - the larger than life characters and feuds 'kane's back from the dead JR!!'. Added to that the 'wow' factor of an amazing match or move

perhaps wrestling is the arena for stuff you can't get anywhere else - violence that isn't violent, nonsense that isn't garbage - maybe it's just a soap opera for men and really angry women...

Thoughts?

I think when done right, the mix of drama, 'violence', comedy and, you know, wrestling ability makes sure you're bound to enjoy something on a show. I realise wrestling isn't considered to be in any sort of 'golden age' right now, but I usually can find something positive in any wrestling show (yes, that goes for Raw too :D).

And partly out of habit too. I started watching when I was 10 and never sort of stopped really. 9 years of WWE PPVs this June! :banananig:

TBH, I can't even remember exactly why I started watching in the first place. A friend and I started watching it around the same time. I think it was partly due to other people watching it, and partly due to wrestling video games. WCW Mayhem FTW!

Not many shows can combine comedy, drama, intrigue and action in one show.

Plus every so often you see something that you think "I'd never see that any anywhere else" and there are just so many charecters to get into.

But if i'm honest i just love to analyse it and i think these days i'm more interested in the company quality than the product itself. I love how they can control (for the most part) how you think and how they manage their storylines.
This is how it works, You're young until you're not
You love until you don't, You try until you can't
You laugh until you cry, You cry until you laugh
And everyone must breathe, Until their dying breath

I get lost in wrestling, it really takes my mind off things in life and allows me to just be a kid again.  I've always had a deep connection with wrestling since I was old enough to watch it.. I remember watching it when i was 3 or 4 years old.

wrestling is so much better and entertaining when u don't go to wrestling sites and read stuff.

Wrestling also got me through some really crappy periods in my life... I knew i always had my heroes to look forward to every week, and somehow, no matter how bad life got, I always had wrestling to hold on to.

It motivated me to lift weights and get into shape also as i always wanted to look like Triple H or Scott Steiner..

80's Hulk Hogan. Back then if you told me He could beat spiderman and the incredible hulk with a big boot and dropping a leg on batman knocking him out cold at the same time I wouldn't argue, He was a larger then life superhero who you could put your heart into believing in. Nowadays I dont watch it as often and the WWE Game with the interesting people I have met on HTGTH kept me into wrestling alot more during the crappier years. Also you always ahve a 50% chance of seeing a midget and nothing else on TV gives you that good a chance.

Well I started as a kid because all the other kids watched it, but fighting/wrestling and such have always been in my nature.  I always enjoyed playfighting as a kid, and to watch it played out on tv with larger than life characters has always amused me.  It gives you a colourful fun look of things which something "Real" like boxing never could.  Tax Account, Plumber, Repo Man, Janitor, Undertaker, Police Man, Convict, Alligator Hunter, Elvis' Wannabe, Evil Clown, you get such a wide array of characters doing crazy over the top things that you just don't see in real life, its one of the best forms of escapism, also thats made me think, there are enough "Out there" gimmicks these days.
