Edge forced to retire

Gutted!!

http://www.wwe.com/inside/edge-announcement

Less than a week after his successful title defense against Alberto Del Rio at WrestleMania XXVII, World Heavyweight Champion Edge has been forced to retire from in-ring competition due to injury. The unexpected news brings to an end a storied WWE career spanning 13 years and consisting of 11 World Title reigns.

The Rated-R Superstar had been suffering numbness and uncontrollable trembling in his arms and hands. This is not the first time Edge has experienced these symptoms of nueropraxia. An MRI administered at Atlanta Midtown Diagnostic Imaging last Monday was sent to Dr. Joseph Maroon, a renowned neurosurgeon and professor of neurosurgery at The Pittsburgh School of Medicine. After careful examination of the MRI, it was determined that Edge would never be cleared to compete again, and thus, he is forced to retire.

In 2003, Edge underwent a two level spinal fusion of the discs between his C5, C6 and C7 vertebrae. After being cleared to compete, The Rated-R Superstar returned to the ring, resulting in stenosis of the spine, or a narrowing of the spinal column, above and below the fused discs. This narrowing resulted in less and less of the vital fluid needed to protect the spinal cord. Medical professionals cannot clear Edge to compete ever again in WWE since doing so could result in paralysis or even death.

Its sad that Edge won't ever be wrestling again. It comes as a shock because I thought he had a few years left.

I feel honored to have witnessed his last match live.

It really is sad.  For the short time I have been a WWE fan, Edge very easily became my favourite wrestler/superstar/entertainer.  Great in the ring, great on the mic, charismatic etc etc.

A sad day for WWE.

Definitely a shocker last night for sure. I hope he has a lifetime of health and happiness now. He would be a fantastic commentator.

You know you've been watching wrestling too long when you've seen a guys entire career start to finish...I'm starting to feel old  :P

Glad though he could go out on top and as he put in, avoid ending up in a wheelchair.  He had one hell of a career and will be missed.

On a side note, it just highlights which show is the "A Show", when Smackdown stars are retiring on RAW.....

He doesn't half ramble on....

Hulk Hogan: "if any of the guys like me, Flair, Hardy, Andre, AA, Blanchard, orndoff, Henning would have listened to doctors we would have quit15yrsago, but I don't know Edges working environment because they are a media company not a wrestling company. HH wrestlers work hurt!"

"What about Foley! I bet EDGE still wants to keep wrestling,he's one of the boys big time!!! HH"

"my take is with a unfixable neck injury it's over ,but he's one of the boys and it will be hard to keep him down,he's 4life HH"

After receiving criticism for his remarks, Hogan clarified his opinion.

"I'm not saying anything bad about Edge but he's a real wrestler,Stone Cold and Cena had neck surgery and u couldn't stop em,Or Edge it's in Edges blood,he lives for this business he's a real wrestler,he a lifer,he's one of the real boys,he's hard to hold down, that's all. HH"

I'd actually seen the headlines already (I do try and avoid looking at results and spoilers) so it wasn't as shocking when I saw it, but still a bit of an emotional moment. Hopefully he sticks around in some kind of non-wrestling capacity, would be a real shame if he's gone completely. :(

PS. What exactly is Hogan going on about up there? :weightlifting:

I have just one question,

What else does EDGE really have left to accomplish. He has done it all and entertained millions. He has most of his health left and Im sure he has WWE money left so why not go out defending your title and winning at WM? If Hogans actng career (sic) ever took off or ifhe had god money his ass wouldnt be in the ring anymore. I think Hogans comments are Bullshit.

Also didn't Arn Aderson retire in WCW bcause of his neck, or is Hogan referring to someone else as AA. God knows I love Hennig, but does Hogan think EDGE should just be old school and take more and more pain killers. I don't want to see EDGE end like that.

Hogan should be happy for a fellow wrestler who he been in the ring with, Going out on the VERY TOP. I'm glad fr what he has given me and happy he could go out on top. HE DID IT HIS WAY.

yeah Anderson lost feeling in his hand i believe and i think can barely use it. MR wonderful Paul Orndorff did major nerve damage to his arm and remember it shrunk considerably.

Yeah it is big news because this now puts the World title up in the air. However that is beside the point I feel for Edge because you could see in his eyes how bad this was killing him, and I just watch and shook my head because to be honest with you guys I thought it was a work and that Alberto was going to come out and ruin it and force Edge to wrestle him on Smackdown for the world title. However after a few minutes of watching it I knew it was the real deal and I knew Edge was speaking from his heart about having to leave wrestling forever.

Now I am going to sound like the bad guy here when I say this but all that could have been prevented if Edge did not take no called for risk just to entertain people, the best advice I ever receive when I wrestle was save your body for when you are old.  I watch a lot of these younger wrestlers and all I see is no called for risk plain and simple for example Sin Cara more he did on Primo was awesome but it was no called for risk that if he had not hit that move just right he would have cripple or even worst he would have killed Primo!

Today wrestlers take too many uncalled for risk and it resulting in shorten careers and too many wrestlers retiring from serious neck injuries that could have been prevent! Hey I know that it takes a certain kind of person to be a wrestler and I know when you step in that ring you have to understand the risk and dangers that come from being in this kind of sport, and also when you step inside that ring you must be able to put your body in the hand of the person you are in that ring with as well as they must trust you with their body. Still when I hear what type of surgery Edge had just to be able to get back into the ring I just shake my head and I have to ask myself is it worth it, was it worth doing all that to come back to entertain people, although Edge yes it was I say no it was not worth because long term effects are not worth it one single bit.

Now I am going to turn it around and sound like a two face here but from a wrestler point of view I see where Edge is coming from because if it was me and I was making the money he was making at the time I would have done it too. Now I know that the wrestling I grew up and love have evolve and change and wrestlers put there bodies through hell just for the sake of entertaining people.  But is it worth it when you get old and can no longer do it?
My heart burns with a desire as it screams out for me to show you the error of your ways, and set you on the path of Righteousness!

Yeah all those TLC matches couldn't have been good for him. but then again, without those matches, maybe he stays a mid carder.

ECW and the Attitude Era were prime examples of this, but this is also why WWE has been toned down, they don't take the same amount of risks they did 10 years ago, that's also one of the things fans complain about though.  To be honest its amazing the other 5 TLC Legends are all still active wrestlers.  How they'll be mobility wise in another 10 years in another question though...

Very Sad for Edge.

I read something yesterday that said how Edge did things the "right" way. won every title on the way to being world champion.

Personally i will always remember him best during his E&C days feuding with the Hardys and the Dudleys. Great feuds and great matches.

As a heel i thought he was great, and i think it suited him more. Not my favourite worker by any means, but he gave alot for WWE and was never a let down IMO.

The only thing i would have loved to have seen is a sustained Edge vs Christian feud over the title.

I wonder if WWE will edit out all the times Edge said "wrestling" and "wrestlers" during his farewell speech on RAW from future broadcasts/dvds.
