Where does Randy Savage rank all time?
« on: May 21, 2011, 01:55:26 am »
Out of the wrestlers you have seen in your lifetime. not going back to Bruno and Gorgeous George Buddy Rogers etc but just from WWF/NWA/WCW era mid 80's on, where does he rank all time?

Like to see some lists and bring some debate to the topic.

High but not in the elite group for me.

Guys like Hogan, Austin, Bret, HBK, Taker, Flair, Rock are in that top tier, but i'd say Savage is in that second tier.

He had a "Classic" match with steamboat and was an essential part of WWF/WWE/WCW at different times.

I was never a massive fan... but the steamboat match was fantastic (and he was a good worker) and the whole Elizabeth moment was great. I remember the feud with Warrior/Flair & Perfect going into Summerslam 92. great stuff.

He was great at interacting with the fans.

Such a tragedy and he will surely take his place in the HOF.

He is in my top 5, and considering the number of non wrestling news outlets that have picked it up, a lot of people agree.  For me so many classic matches.  'Mania VI & VII my personal faves.  Everyone knows I run a nWo channel, and his stuff in WCW was great to.  And as people have said, such a pro, his promos and matches were spot on.  Promo wise he was superb, he played crazy to perfection.  I still remember one of my fave promos he did.  My doctor says I'm OCD, I said yeah, One Cool Dude!

I think Austin, Hogan and Rock are in the top 3 (order interchangable) but Savage is pretty much in the tier after that.  I'd place him at 5 just below Michaels at 4 and just in front of Flair at 6.  He is in front of Bret for me because he is a beter promo guy and talker.  I don't think I put Taker ahead of him because Taker usually wrestles at the level of his opponents and has had some stinkers the past few years.  HHH is nowhere near these guys and I put Foley/Mankind in front of him.  To think about it, Jericho probably belongs in my list as well.  Not any of the guys currrently headlining the E is even close to any of these guys.

Hogan or Rock aren't great wrestlers but I have to stick them in my top 3 because of cultural relevance and crossover appeal.

IMO i think as a name he was extremely well know but i think talk of him being in a top 5 is off the mark.

I understand that everyone has their opinions but on relevance to the Wrestling world not many would be placed ahead of him. He is 9th on the all time combined days as WWE champion and but only had the two reigns, but then he was the stand in face for Hogan at the time, at a time when WWF's attitude was Hogan wins the world title at Mania! In fact the majority of Savage's first title run, still had Hogan involved in the top matches with him if i remember correctly The Mega-Powers storyline was one of the greatest IMO and with Elizabeth they played it brilliantly and Savages heel turn was performed perfectly.... But hogan was still the focus of the company.

In WCW he won the title 4 times although never really got the chance to have a sustained run. Its interesting that on every world title run he had he lost to Hogan or Flair... if you are gonna lose, lose to the best.

I think saying that he is more important to wrestling than Bret, HBK & Taker is wide of the mark. I think that Hogan and Austin are the most important of all time, then you have people like HBK, Rock, Bret, Taker, Flair & Sting. I'd say "Macho" had it all and you probably couldn't argue with him being either side of the top ten (sort of 8-12 region)

Wherever people place him matters little at times like these. He was one of the greatest, he could wrestle, he could talk and he oozed charisma.

R.I.P

I would put Savage as #2 on my list simple because the man was performer day in and day out and I never saw or read anything about Savage having a bad match!
