Top 10 All Time Matches (WWE)
« on: July 11, 2009, 05:11:33 pm »
Ok i just thought this would probally throw up some interesting differences. A great match can be many things but these matches below are matches that i can watch over and over again. I know matches like Hogan vs Andre where legendary as was matches like Savage vs Steamboat but i can't watch them over and over again as easily as these below:

1/ Bret Hart vs British Bulldog (Summerslam) - I loved this match and for a long while i remember watching it over and over. The Atmosphere was brilliant being in the UK. You got the sense that Bret was destined for bigger and better things but the match they put on was brilliant.

2/ Kurt Angle vs Shane McMahon - I just remember this match was like an old ECW match. I remember when Tried to belly-to-belly suplex shane through the sign and it didn't work like 3 times until finally it worked. It had many great moments and was one of those matches that showed what the attitude era was all about.

3/ E&C vs Dudleys vs Hardyz (WM i think)- I remember thinking WOW after this match. All these guys put their bodies on the line and came up with some just magical ideas. I mean they created this match and i'd be suprised if anyone ever does it better. Another watch over and over again match.

4/ The Rock vs SCSA (1st At Mania) - I just loved this match.... two of the best ever just giving everything. It had been an incredible build up in the months before and when the match came it just blew me away. I just remember them kicking out of each others finishers. Brilliant.

5/ Bret Hart vs Owen Hart (WM10) - A brilliant technical match. Had everything including a suprising ending.

6/ HBK vs Undertaker (Mania 2009) - The only standout match on this years Mania. It will definatly go down as a classic.

7/ SCSA vs Bret Hart (Mania 13) - This match was great had a real feeling of Austin rise in popularity and the ending of Austin bleeding passed out was just another iconic moment in Austin's career.

8/ Kurt Angle vs Chris Beniot (Backlash 2001) - I remember thinking that this match was the best wrestling match (in terms of wrestling) i have ever seen. The submission counters were fantastic and its a great watch.

9/ Taker vs Mankind (KOTR) - One of the most iconic moments in Wrestling was when Taker threw Foley off that Cell and then picked him up and threw him through the cell. Not a classic wrestling match but another one of those WOW matches.

10/ Cena vs HBK (Mania) - i know that many of you will laugh at this.... but i'm picking it for the atmosphere and the brilliant ending. Everyone thought that Cena's popularity was dying and no one thought that Cena would make HBK tap at Wrestlemania and i think its one of those matches that invoked emotion in people and for that reason i choose it.

I'm sure there are some i've missed out but they are the ones that pop into my mind now. Matches like Taker vs Kane, Mankind vs Rock "I Quit" Match, HBK vs Bret "ironman" match, HBK vs Razor "Ladder Match"  and Edge vs Foley @ Mania are also some of my favourites but just didn't make the top 10.
This is how it works, You're young until you're not
You love until you don't, You try until you can't
You laugh until you cry, You cry until you laugh
And everyone must breathe, Until their dying breath

Woah this is tricky, I'll have to do a lot of thinking about this, I think I once did an essential 50 matches of WWE, I'll have to dig that out to remind me.

Quite dificult to narrow it down to 10....

These aren't necessarily in any order, just 10 favourites of mine:

1: Mankind VS. The Rock - "I Quit" Match - Royal Rumble 1999
I wish I watched wrestling during the Attitude era but alas, I just missed it. :P Just a brutal match, with Foley taking most of the abuse (obviously). The unplanned ending where The Rock whacks Foley with the chair ten times really made Rock look evil and Foley as nearly indestructible. Also, some great one-liners on the mic. ("The Rock's gonna kick your fat ass...") The best (only?) match to manage to mix senseless violence and comedy. :D

2: Randy Orton VS. Cactus Jack - No Holds Barred Match - Backlash 2004
Foley countering the RKO by dumping Orton onto the tacks is just a brilliant moment. Orton sold everything in this match really well and took quite a few bumps (the tacks, being thrown off the stage, the elbow drop off the stage). Lawler's support of Orton during the match and his criticism of Foley I enjoyed too. RIP heel announcers.

3: The Rock VS. Stone Cold Steve Austin - Wrestlemania 19
WM 19 is my favourite WWE PPV and this match is one of the reaons why. At the time I didn't know that Austin was planning on retiring from the ring so I don't think I knew who was gonna win. I liked the atmosphere of the PPV, what with the semi-open stadium and the fact the crowd looked even bigger than it probably was. My favourite of their WM matches, and surely the best note on which Austin could have ended his in-ring career (than God that Syber Sunday match with The Coach never happened... :P).

4: Kurt Angle VS. Brock Lesnar - Wrestlemania 19
The only real 'wrestling' match on this list. :o I guess a classic match is to be expected when you put two guys with 'proper' wrestling backgrounds in the ring. It may end up being forever remembered for Brock's Shooting Star Botch Press ("Oh my god, how is Lesnar not dead right now?!" - Tazz) but the reast of the match before that was excellent.

5: Hulk Hogan VS. Vince McMahon - Street Fight - Wrestlemania 19
Yet another reason to love WM 19. ;D The idea of two middle-aged men who weren't competing in the ring regularly having a match at Wrestlemania shouldn't really have worked. But the Street Fight rule allowed them to do all sorts of stuff, including a Vince leg drop from a ladder! :o Madness! Vince's "here's Johnny"" look when he looks over the ring apron is classic too. :D

6: Mankind VS. The Rock - Last Man Standing Match - IYH: St. Valentine's Day Massacre
OK, there was another match that managed to mix senselss violence and comedy. A month after the "I Quit" Match, Rock and Mankind's rematch was a Last Man Standing Match in which The Rock performed a rendition of Smackdown Hotel. ;D The ending (with both guys knocking each other out with chairs) may have disappointed people but worth it to see Rock nearly fall out the ring after being hit in the head. These two have definitely been involved in some of the great WWE matches over the years.

7: Elimination Chamber Match - Survivor Series 2002
Just because it was a new concept and it was Shawn Michaels' second match in over four years. There isn't really one reason I can come up with for I enjoy this match, I guess I just do. :D

8: Mankind VS. The Undertaker - Boiler Room Brawl - Summerslam 1996
Despite the fact that the camera signal cuts out a few times and the announcers barely speak during the time the two guys are in the boiler room, I still really like this match. I think maybe the lack of commentary and the 'sloppiness' of it makes it seem more real. There aren't really any obvious choreogrpahed spots (except for maybe Foley being tipped off a ladder onto a pile of boxes) either, which helps since there's less chance of something going wrong. The Paul Bearer heel turn at the end was done well too I think. Extra points for Paul's post-match "I'm Paul Bearer and you're not!" comment to the camera. :D

9: Armageddon Hell In A Cell Match - Armageddon 2000
Again, like the Elimination Chamber, it had six guys fighting, though in this one, they were all in the match at once and the fight ended up at the entrance way. Nothing technical really, just a sort of wonderful chaos.

10: Brock Lesnar VS. The Undertaker - No Mercy 2003
This one may seem like an odd choice amongst all these famous matches but I've always really like this match. It was a Biker Chain Match, but the chain only came into play right at the end when Lesnar wrapped it around his fist and nailed 'Taker with it. Brock was in his second heel phase and Bikertaker was still alive. A very good mix of wrestling and brawling IMO. The announcers did a good job of selling the match and each guy's moves etc. Besides a UT piledriver on the steps where Brock's head clearly doesn't conenct with anything (unlike the WM 19 Shooting Star Press, HIYO), it was just an overall well-done match.

Honourable mentions to HBK/Diesel at IHY: Good Friends, Better Enemies, the various TLC/Triangle Ladder Matches invoving the Hardys, Dudleys and E&C, HHH/Foley at Royal Rumble 2000, Kane/Shane at Survivor Series 2003 and the **** Triple Threat Match at WM 17.

Heres what screams right off the top of my head. In no paticular order, just thought i would do one real quick.

HBK vs. Brett Hart--The Wrestlemania Iron-man Match. I love this match.

HHH vs. Cactus Jack--I think it was an I quit Royal Rumble match. I just really liked it. It was back when HHH was actually entertaining in the ring.

HBK vs. Undertaker--At this years wrestlemania. I loved it.

HBK vs. Razor Ramon--At wrestlemania. That ladder match was just awesome. loved it.

HBK vs. Kurt Angle--Wrestlemania 21 I believe. Cant remember but I loved this match. And at the time these were my two favorites.

The Hardys vs Edge & Christian vs. The Dudleys--Both of their tlc matchs were **** awesome. And even the ladder match was damn good. I also loved the hardys vs Edge & christian back when the hardys were with gangrel. What an awesome match that was too.

Jericho vs. Christian---Cant remember the exact match but i think it was a ladder match for a title when they were feuding with trish. I really liked that whole feud and just remember one of those matches being really entertaining to me.

The Rock vs. Stone Cold--The no dq one for the title at wrestlemania. That match was awesome.

Brett Hart vs. Stone Cold--The submission match. **** grade a entertainment.

HBK vs. Chris Jericho--Wrestlemania 19. My favorite wrestler was back at wrestlemania in a very entertaining match. God I missed him.

Thats just off the top of my head. HBK dominates because hes a god. I just love that man. He truly is Mr. Wrestlemania. :smoking:

Yeah it was Royal Rumble 2000, 'twas a Street Fight, Foley's great I Quit Royal Rumble match was the year before with The Rock.

Powers of Pain, The Rockers, The British Bulldogs, The Hart Foundation and The Young Stallions vs. Demolition, The Brain Busters, The Bolsheviks, The Fabulous Rougeaus and The Conquistadors (Survivor Series 1988) - This is one of the best showcases of tag team wrestling in the companies history, this 40+ minute Survivor Series match is great despite the confusing double turn at the end, an essential for fans of tag teams.

Shawn Michaels vs. Razor Ramon, Ladder Match (Wrestlemania X) - First event I watched live on television, this match was amazing to watch then and I still love it now.

Shawn Michaels vs. Undertaker, Hell In A Cell Match (Badd Blood '97) - The first and for me still the best Hell in a Cell, many people remember the stunt fest match that followed this with Foley but as an actual match, this was much better.

Shawn Michaels vs. Undertaker (Wrestlemania 25) - Anyone who saw this years show knows this was a classic for the ages.

Chris Benoit vs. Kurt Angle, Ultimate Submission Match (Backlash '01) - These two always had good matches and this is the one that stands out to me more than the rest.

Hulk Hogan vs. The Ultimate Warrior (Wrestlemania VI) - The crowd for this made it, just like they did with Hogan vs. The Rock many years later, a perfect example of how crowd emotion alone can carry a match, that and these two weren't the really bad workers people make them out to be.

Shawn Michaels vs. Kurt Angle (Wrestlemania 21) - I know I've put many Shawn Michaels matches on here but what can I say, this is superb stuff.

Edge & Christian vs. The Dudleyz vs. The Hardyz, TLC Match (Wrestlemania XVII) - They were all classic but this one stands out as its the one where Rhyno, Spike and Lita get involved and Jeff takes the mid air spear from Edge which they actually referenced in their recent Ladder Match when Edge tried to repeat the spot and it was reveresed into a mid air Twist of Fate, yes creative sometime have a good memory.

Bret Hart vs. Mr. Perfect (Summerslam '91) - Had to have some Bret matches on here and I prefer this to the Bulldog classic people remember and the Austin battle.

The Rock vs. Stone Cold Steve Austin (Wrestlemania XVII) - Out of their 3 'Mania matches this for me is the best, and rounded out one of the strongest 'Mania events ever.

I should have given Michaels/Jericho from WM 19 an honourable mention too. Definitely a classic match.
