Scream 4
« on: July 15, 2009, 07:40:26 pm »
David Arquette has confirmed speculation that he and wife Courteney Cox will be returning for Scream 4.

The actor, who plays police officer Dwight 'Dewey' Riley in the horror franchise, told E! Online that he is excited about the prospect of reuniting with Cox (Gale Weathers) on screen.

"I fell in love with my wife on Scream, so the opportunity to bring [Dewey] back to life and for my wife to play that really bitchy character again, it's just going to be really fun. It's just great," he said.

"Kevin Williamson is writing the script at this moment, and hopefully Wes Craven is going to direct. Kevin has sort of put out the broad strokes, but I don't think I'm at liberty to share any of that."

I was a fan of the first 2 movies, the 3rd was pretty bad, it seems odd revisiting the franchise, hopefully its a good film.

In other words, Neve Campbell is the smartest person associated with the franchise.

This film is not needed. They were scraping the bottom of the barrel with Scream 3. They are just trying to cash in on the latest horror boom.

If they're smart, they'll shelve Scream 4 and reboot the franchise with a remake. Would be lame, but would draw more attention, make more money, and have more potential than Scream 4.

Who would want to see this?

Scream was a superb post modern horror film, looking at the absurdities of a terrible genre and making them work for it

Scream 2 was so odd attempt to be post-post modern and turn the usual nonsense of a sequal into some kind of comedy - it failed

Scream 3 - i have no idea what the goal was here, comedy? It was all over the place

The film was actually pure genius. Early/mid 90s was a **** stain on the horror genre and literally its lowest point ever. Horror was dead. Scream comes out and basically pokes the dead genre with a stick and laughs at it. The film is literally lightning in a bottle.

I used to laugh at people who acted like this was a real horror film. Its not. Its comedy/borderline satire. They even let the crowd in on it for **** sake. The opening scene is basically spoofing every babysitter in a horror movie scenario, most notably the original When A Stranger Calls.

Ironically this film kick started a new horror boom.

I actually like certain elements of Scream 2, but its practically spoofing the first one, and fails on several levels. Scream 3 was made strictly for money. Doing Scream 4 goes against everything the first movie was about, so I'll pass regardless of who is in it or how good/bad the script is.

Like I touched on earlier, I would go the remake route and make a statement on our remake culture like the original did with 80s horror. Once again, just let the audience in on the joke, add a bit of genuine scares to it, and it'll work.

remake would be a terrible idea. the first film isn't that old.

truth is there still is something within the scream world that could be turned into a decent horror throwback type film.

Kevin Williamson has hinted that he may kill off Neve Campbell's character in Scream 4.

The screenwriter told the New York Post in June that he was having writer's block and trying to figure out "a Sid-less scenario", referring to penning a sequel without franchise heroine Sidney Prescott (Campbell).

Courteney Cox and David Arquette have confirmed that they will return to the series, but Williamson indicated that Campbell's character may have met an untimely end in the ten-year span between movies.

He told MTV: "It’s gonna sort of involve our returning characters - the only characters left alive. We’ve got Courteney Cox and David Arquette returning."

Williamson confirmed that the film will be a direct sequel to the events in the first trilogy, adding: "[The movie] picks up after Scream 3 - ten years later."

He's an idiot.

MIGHT kill her off?  :hihi:

Of course she's dead. She's NOT coming back. He acts like God showed him some grand revelation while in the middle of writer's block.

Kevin Williamson has announced that upcoming movie Scream 4 will be the first instalment of a new trilogy for the franchise.

Series director Wes Craven had previously told DS that the screenwriter had informed him that the sequel could lead to subsequent parts.

"It's a new trilogy, it's ten years later," he told iF magazine. "[But then I thought] a trilogy – now I'd be interested! Could we do that and develop a trilogy? And then I started thinking about the story. I created three different chapters, broke it up and I got really excited."

David Arquette recently revealed that he and wife Courteney Cox would be on board the project to reprise their original roles.

However, Neve Campbell is reportedly not partaking in the new films, with the Dawson's Creek scribe hinting that he may kill off her Sidney Prescott character.

He explained: "[It's] Sheriff Dewey, I mean Deputy Dewey, oops. It's Dewey and Gale and that's it."

Williamson also said that he expects to finish the script in a few months' time and hopes to bring Craven back to helm the series, adding: "Wes wants to read the script before we sign on, which makes sense. We've sort of chatted about it. We're a Scream family, so not having dad sitting at the head of the table wouldn't make sense."

Another trilogy?  Thats assuming the first one does well at the box office, is there enough interest left in the franchise?

Word going around is that neve Campbell is trying to get a bigger offer then the one they made her. Hence her being so vocal about not doing it.

Wes Craven has said that Scream 4 will lampoon the state of the horror film genre today and will take shots at the Saw franchise.

The movie's director told Entertainment Weekly that the fourth Scream instalment will continue the tradition of exposing the conventions of the slasher plot started by the first three films.

"It feels like the end of an era of a certain type of film. There are series of films, a lot of sequels, and a lot of remakes, and part of the humour of Scream 4 is when characters comment on that. 'Enough of Saw 25 and all'. A lot of films, directors, and studios are the butts of some of the jokes."

He continued by saying that just like in the trilogy, knowing the horror formula will help them beat the Ghostface murderer.

"In order to figure out what's happening around them, the characters have to figure out where the genre of horror is. So this is a look at horror after ten years of a lot of sequels rather than original films coming up year after year. One film is successful, and then they make 25 of them."

The creator also promised a reinvention of horror itself.

"I think it's time for something new. I've done remakes of my own films too, with, The Last House On The Left and The Hills Have Eyes, but we feel it's time for something new and different, and that’s what this film is going to be."

The man thats part of the problem makes a film about the problem?

Its a bit like Michael Bay trying to parody blockbusters....

Scream 1 was fantastic - but 2 and 3 where laughable, they weren't insightful, self aware or clever - they were just bafflingly bad

Scream 4 looks like Scream 3 all over again
