Did Jericho deserve to be first undisputed champ?
« on: February 12, 2011, 01:42:33 pm »
I am reading Jericho's new book, and am currently on the chapter where he became the First ever Undisputed champ. I am the biggest Jericho fan on the planet, but reading this chapter and how he somewhat faltered as the champ, it makes me kind of think The Rock or Stone Cold should've had the honor of such a history making event.

what do u think?

To be honest with you D, Jericho was not the first choice to become the first ever undisputed champion from what I gather that honor was suppose to go too Chris Benoit but his neck injure keep him from doing it so Jericho was given that honor.

In truth I think Jericho deserve it more than the Rock or Austin because those two had already been champion many times over and I believe that when Jericho won it, the WWE fans were caught off guard by Jericho becoming champion. It was a smart and good move for the WWE at the time because Jericho was hot during that period and no one could touch him during that period of time.

As with alot of things in wrestling the title of "First Undisputed Champion" was a tool to get Jericho over even further. I mean Jericho still uses the "i best rock and austin in the same night" line.

Deserve it... probably not as many before and at present (at that time) probably deserved it more, but despite the honour would have been wasted on The Rock or Austin... Jericho needed it more than them and WWE knew that.

I agree with you 100% there and I believe that if that honor had went to the Rock or Austin it would not have meant as much as it did with Jericho, and it really put on that level with the Rock, Austin and dare I say Triple H. Talent wise Jericho was ten time better than those three but he did not have that one thing that could set him apart for those three, so letting him be the first ever undisputed champion help put him on that level but it also set him apart from them and their title runs. Let's face there are a lot of wrestlers who have World title runs and to be honest you could not tell the different the person they just won the title from, however, with Jericho becoming the undisputed World Champion that set him part from every World Title holder. He was the first ever undisputed champion and up that time there had been several world titles but Jericho was the first ever undisputed world champion since Lou Theaz or however you spell his last name, and that means a lot in wrestling history.

For whatever reason Jericho never seems to have worked as the champion, I always felt the undisputed title should have gone elsewhere, not sure to who though...

Well Izzy I believe that honor would have fit Chris Benoit better than anyone because Benoit was the better performer than anyone I have ever seen, let's face the fact I know Benoit will never be mention as one the best wrestlers of all time in the WWE because of the **** he did. However Chris Benoit would have been awesome as the first ever undisputed world champion, but like I said before a neck injury keep him from gaining that honor and it went to Jericho instead.

I'm surprised that Benoit was allegedly the original choice to be Undisputed Champ. He broke his neck in June, and Jericho became Champion in December. I can perhaps see that they planned ahead what they might do with the WCW Championship after the Alliance lost, but I wouldn't have thought they'd have been thinking about who might become Undisputed Champion until much nearer the time....
