It's only right that one of the biggest and best Metal bands of all time has a thread.

So what are people's favourite songs and albums?

My favourite albums are always going to be their 80s records, but the only album I don't actually like is St. Anger.  Death Magnetic I thought was a great return to form and surprised a lot of people, after St. Anger nobody thought they'd recover, most assumed they were past it.  For me I'd rate their albums:

Ride The Lightning
Kill 'Em All
Master of Puppets
...And Justice For All
Death Magnetic
The Black Album
Garage Inc.
Reload
Load
Live, ****, Binge & Purge
S & M
St. Anger

My 10 Top Songs would be (in no particular order):

No Leaf Clover
Seek & Destroy
The Call of Ktulu
I Disappear
All Nightmare Long
Blackened
Welcome Home (Sanitarium)
The Unforgiven
For Whom The Bell Tolls
One

Death Magnetic and AJFA are peas in a pod

With both I can barely tell one song from another - sounds like a 70 min loop

...so yeah, a return to form in one sense?

Load, Reload, Garage Inc, St Anger, Deatrh Magnetic

When I think Metallica I think of one bad album after another

Their 80's stuff might be great - but its almost like it being buried under crap now

I've got their first five albums, Garage Inc and Death Magnetic. I think there's some good stuff on Garage Inc.: Whiskey In The Jar, Tuesday's Gone, Die Die My Darling, It's Electric, Sabbra Cadabra... all great! :D

I haven't listened to some of their albums enough to make good judgements about them. I'll have to think about my fav songs. Haven't really listened to any Metallica recently...

I just think there are so many good songs outside those albums.

Their cover versions of Tuesday's Gone, Astronomy, Turn The Page (The Music Video for that is very good) and the rest on those double albums are solid.

The Load/Reload sessions: Fuel, Until It Sleeps, King Nothing, Hero of the Day, Ain't my ****, The Memory Remains, The Unforgiven II.  Admittedly there are some very weak tracks and those 2 albums should have been one.  I think one of people's biggest gripes is because it isn't the Metallica they had come to know and love, they had a country song, old lady backing vocalist, haircuts, shorter songs etc.  I remember I used to knock the albums to, but once I got my head past that bs I've come to find a lot of the stuff enjoyable.  Difference I find with their 80s stuff is for me every tracks on every album was untouchable.

I never understood why people were so critical about St. Anger. Obviously it wasn't their strongest album but it IS a decent album. It's when it is compared to others just as "Master of Puppets" or And Justice For All" that it gets bad mouthed. Fact of the matter is, when Metallica and Bob Rock set out to create the album that became St. Anger, the plan was to go another direction with their music by making an album that sounded like a band jamming in their garage only this band was Metallica, and I feel they accomplished that.

To add to these "band jamming" style sessions Hetfield had 'personal demons' and was constantly fighting with Lars over creative control of the band, while Hammett was stuck in the middle of it all and they were missing a bass player. Although they never discovered it to the end, all this contributed to the album and gave the lyrics and music a raw sense of depth and emotion, such emotion that has never been displayed in any other Metallica album to date.

Listening to songs like "The Unnamed Feeling" and "Frantic" become really catchy after a while and with the incredible emotion coming from Hetfields voice you can relate to it alot more.

Frantic tick tock blah blah etc. and so on.  Brand new band or Metallica, for me the stuff sucked outside of the title track, good that some people like it, but for me its one of the worst albums I've ever bought.

1. No Leaf Clover
A superb choice dude, I really love that track, I'd of liked a studio version as well as the S & M version, this song doesn't normally get enough love.
