AC/DC
« on: July 06, 2009, 01:08:43 am »
I saw them at Hampden on June 30 and it was a brilliant show. It was hot, we'd been standing for about 4 hours, people were getting squashed for the first few songs, but it was still great. ;D :P

So, favourite albums, songs, etc., any concert stories, do share.

(When I was thinking of a HTGTH username, I looked at my CD collection and chose the first one I saw. BUYV probably isn't one of their better albums, though Heatseeker, That's The Way I Wanna Rock 'N' Roll and Ruff Stuff are good songs)

Definately a band I want to see Live.  Album wise though, I've heard a fair few over the years and come to the conclusion owning Back in Black and Highway to Hell is enough for me.  I love those albums, but from the many, many others, there are none I'd want to own, I could pick random tracks here and there such as Thunderstruck, TNT, Whole Lotta Rosie etc. to make a compilation album but thats about it, I am right in thinking despite there massive discography they have never released a Greatest Hits record aren't I?  That just seems odd.  Thinking about it I actually think I may own some more of their albums on vinyl somewhere, BlowUpYourVideo may be one of them  :D

Yeah, they've never put out a 'best of'. Who Made Who, the Maximum Overdrive soundtrack they did, is the closest thing to an AC/DC greatest hits, but being made for a movie, it misses out loads of songs (and only has Bon Scott song).

All their albums definitely have songs that aren't as good as the 'hits' and more well-known songs. BIB and HTH are obviously the 'big' albums, but I also think Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap is one of their best albums, along with Ballbreaker, which I think is quite underrated. Their last album was very good too, I thought.

Checked my vinyl collection it is: BlowUpYourVideo, near mint condition to.

I may have to re-investigate their back catalogue.  These days I generally use spotify/last.fm for sampling/checking out bands unfortunately AC/DC are anti all that stuff.

AC/DC may be releasing a major box set later this year. Reports suggest this will come in a box shaped as an amplifier - that actually works. It will contain three CDs, two DVDs and a vinyl album. There will be a CD of studio rarities, two CDs featuring live rarities, a DVD disc of Family Jewels Part 3 (1992-2009) and a DVD disc featuring a show from 2003 in Circus Krone, Germany. The vinyl album will have all the studio rarities. In addition, there will be a 164-page book, plus loads of extras, such as three black-and-white lithographs of unpublished photos of the band in Alberts Studio in 1977, a flyer for the 1976 Lock Up Your Daughters UK tour and a poster from the 1977 European Let There Be Rock Tour. There are also plans for a three-disc box version called Best Of The Box Set, which will have the studio rarities CD, one CD of live rarities and the Family Jewels Part 3 DVD.

^I'll probably check that out but I still need to finish watching their last box set, Plug Me In. I've got a couple of unreleased AC/DC songs but I never really listen to them. I wonder what the "live rarities" will be.....

They are the John Mellencamp of the rock world....... killer songs spread across mostly mediocre albums. This band will never do a hits album because if they get the track list correct, no one will ever need to buy anything but the hits album.

Highway to Hell
Back in Black
Razor's Edge
Dirty Deeds

is really all you need. You're only missing a handful of good songs by not owning anything else.

Blow Up Your Video is one of the worst albums of the 80s.

Blow Up Your Video is one of the worst albums of the 80s.

I should probably take offense to that.... :P

But I agree that a few of their albums are hits plus some other songs. Though IMO, they have a lot of great album tracks which the 'casual' fan might not know; Overdose, Big Balls, Night Of The Long Knives, Danger, Ruff Stuff, Burnin' Alive, Stormy May Day are some that spring to mind.

Also, the entire Flick Of The Switch album is underrated I think. The title track is one of the best Brian Johnson-era AC/DC songs ever IMO. :stonecold:

I hated Flick of the Switch as well. Other than Back in Black and the title track to Who Made Who, their musical output in the 80s was atrocious.

I could make a 2 cd best of collection, and with room to spare on each disc....

Jailbreak
TNT
Whole Lotta Rosie
The Jack
Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap
Big Balls
Ride On
Problem Child
Highway to Hell
Girls Got Rhythm
Night Prowler

Back In Black
You Shook Me All Night Long
Rock N Roll Aint Noise Pollution
Hells Bells
For Those About to Rock
Shake Your Foundations
Sink the Pink
Who Made Who
Thunderstruck
Are You Ready
Money Talks
Big Guns

Mine would probably look like:

It's A Long Way To The Top
High Voltage
The Jack
Rocker
Ride On
Big Balls
Let There Be Rock
Whole Lotta Rosie
Rock 'N' Roll Damnation
Highway To Hell
If You Want Blood
Touch Too Much
Girls Got Rhythm
Jailbreak
Baby, Please Don't Go

Hell's Bells
Shoot To Thrill
You Shook Me All Night Long
For Those About To Rock
I Put The Finger On You
Flick Of The Switch
Danger
Who Made Who
Heatseeker
Moneytalks
Thunderstruck
Are You Ready
Hard As A Rock
Rock 'N' Roll Train
Anything Goes

though like I said, they have a lot of other good album tracks too. Stiff Upper Lip is their weakest album IMO. Strange that Brian Johnson sounds better on Black Ice eight years after SUL....

Oooo this is fun, ok my Double Disc selection would be.

The Entire Highway to Hell album + the song Whole Lotta Rosie

and the 2nd Disc would be

The Entire Back in Black album + the song Thunderstruck

Funny, I ended up buying SUL when it came out years ago.  I think my main beef is that there aren't enough rockers on that album.  Too many mid tempo blues songs.

On SUL, Brian sounds a lot better than on Razor's Edge and Ballbreaker.  On those two 90s albums he sounds like he has a cold or is extremely constipated.  I find it kinda funny (and painful) to listen to him sing on those two albums.

My 2 disc set

Hell Aint a Bad Place to Be
Sin City
Dirty Deeds
Whole Lotta Rosie
Back in Black
Heatseeker
Moneytalks
Fire your Guns
Thunderstruck
Mistress for Christmas
Who Made Who
Guns for Hire
TNT

Highway to Hell
Girls Got Rhythm
Rock and Roll Train
Anything Goes
Shot Down in Flames
Hail Caeser
Shoot to Thrill
Hells Bells
You shook me all night long
Hard as a rock
Ballbreaker
Touch too much

I probably left out a bunch too as I'm doing this on the fly.

AC/DC finished up their Black Ice dates for the remainder of the year with the last of three shows in Buenos Aires. While there, the Argentine government in honor of the band's decades of rock, presented the band with the title of Distinguished Citizens Of Buenos Aires. AC/DC have also announced a string of Austrian/German live dates for 2010 on their Black Ice World Tour. The itinerary is as follows: May 22 - A-Wels, Austria - Flughafen 25 - Hannover, Germany - Messe. June 12/13 - Stuttgart, Germany - Cannstatter Wasen (Festival) 19/20 - Dresden, Germany - Festwiese Ostragehege (Festival) 22 - Berlin, Germany - Olympiastadion.
