Megadeth
« on: July 06, 2009, 04:33:14 pm »
Another of my favourite bands, and with a new album on the horizon I thought it was time to give them a thread.

In my teens I was a big Megadeth fan before I lost interest for a few years, but with the release of some quality recent records my interest returned.  I bought plenty of their albums when play.com was selling them at 3.99 and 4.99, my favourite proably being Countdown to Extinction, I even have the poster on the wall in my roof.  I think I'm one of the few who enjoyed later tracks like Trust, Crush 'Em (Goldberg - Universal Soldier - Wahey!) and Moto Psycho when most just slated the stuff, admittedly the albums those tracks were on were very hit and miss but recent records seem to have catapulted them back into metal head minds, heck most I know rate them over Metallica (that seems to be a regular debate over the years).

So here are the details on the latest album:

The track listing for MEGADETH's twelfth studio album, Endgame, which is due on September 15 through Roadrunner Records. The CD was recorded at the band's own studio in San Marcos, California - Vic's Garage - which was named after their legendary and iconic Vic Rattlehead character

Endgame tracklisting: 'Dialectic Chaos', 'This Day We Fight!', '44 Minutes', '1,320', 'Bite The Hand That Feeds', 'Bodies Left Behind', 'Endgame', 'The Hardest Part Of Letting Go... Sealed With A Kiss', 'Headcrusher', 'How the Story Ends', 'Nothing Left To Lose'.

On Tuesday, July 7th, Roadrunnerrecords.com will be offering up an exclusive download of the new Megadeth song 'Headcrusher'.

Endgame is being produced by Andy Sneap and Dave Mustaine. Sneap also manned the boards for 2007’s United Abominations.

Endgame boasts the technicality, ferocity and snarl that’s synonymous with Megadeth and Mustaine. It’s a violent masterwork that represents Mustaine’s best work in nearly two decades. In a musical world dominated by bands that make generic, blanket statements, Endgame finds Mustaine, once again, making informed and substantial lyrical declarations about the state of the world we live in.

Mustaine himself commented on Endgame, saying, “Thematically, I’ve never been known to be a silent bystander in a world that needs our participation. As more is revealed about our former President’s legacy, a little-known yet staggeringly frightening document which was signed into law, named ‘Endgame,’ has been uncovered. The album Endgame is the most energetic music offering I have penned in over a decade and is far more believable than knowing someone signed ‘Endgame’ -the document- into law. The album is also the perfect ‘ass- kicking’ music to listen to once you are done reading the aforementioned document!”

In short, it’s the Megadeth record that fans of classics like So Far, So Good... So What? and Rust In Peace have been chomping at the bit for.

“This new album is my proudest moment since the famous (or infamous) Rust In Peace album,” Mustaine also said. “With this album, I am also very excited to be introducing my new lead guitarist Chris Broderick to the world. I have always felt lucky to have had top shredders in that position, but after touring with Chris in support of my last album, I couldn’t wait to get into the studio and see what he could do.”

Megadeth’s lineup consists of Mustaine, Broderick, bassist James LoMenzo and drummer Shawn Drover.

Listened to that album again today, it is pretty decent stuff, I've got the copy with bonus tracks on, there's a pretty neat spanish version of Trust.

Head Crusher is now available to download, just listened to it for the first time, its pretty decent.

Get the new track dude, it rocks hard.

And having the softer side that you do, I'd recommend the track A Tout Le Monde...

You should try to check out Rust in Peace.  There is a lot of thrashy groove and mad guitar solos from Marty Friedman.  I've been listening to a mix I made of that album a lot lately.

Thanks for the suggestion!

Didn't they release a remake of that song with Cristiina Scabbia doing a duet with Dave Mustaine?

They did on their last album, although I prefer the original.

Megadeth are a classic case of bad production ruining an album

Original Rust in Peace sounds almost as dreadful as ...and justice for all

...but they were all remixed a few years back, doesnt even sound like the same band anymore...

...and thats soooo good

Remixes are masterpieces - and Rust in Peace is the jewel in the crown - Tornado of Souls is **** amazing

...strangely CTE has never clicked with me and while i adired Cryptic writings years ago i cant get into that anymore

The system has failed was a real return to form though United Abominations didnt blow me away

All the albums I've got are the re-releases, I've never heard the originals to compare.

Have you checked out the new song yet dude?

I'm been listening to the track Promises off The World Needs a Hero and its fantastic!  Infact the entire album is quite underated, I'm really enjoying listening to it, I remember when he came out most reviews slated it.  It also has one of the best album covers to  8)

Megadeth's Dave Mustaine offiers this update:

"Droogies!

Well, I made it and day two of the procedure is almost over. I wanted to take this time to thank you for all of your support. It was necessary for me to do this so that I could continue to operate at maximum potential for us all, and the timing was right, the doctor was right, and my mentality was prepared to have a long frikken needle stuck into my neck, just short of the brain stem.

I am over any of the pain from the procedure and I thank you for the confidence to break free from this bondage. I am also starting to experience the effects of the cervical epidural that they did, and the medication that they inject into my spinal column. We are optimistic that this will eliminate any need for further procedures to address the bulging disks in my thoracic vertebrae.

Meanwhile, I have had such a strenuous last few weeks. We had to finish the artwork for the record, and then there was the fiasco that went along with that. Then next was making the merchandise line for the good people at our vendors like Hot Topic, and the mom and pop stores were next, and this damn near killed me because of the deadline from the record company, and then the deadline to do the merchandise, and oh yeah, there was that video we just did in-between all of the work I have been doing.

Today Justis did some interviewing of me at the studio, and I cannot wait for the Megadeth Girls, and the She Wolves get a look at my son. Of course I said he was handsome, so that means he doesn't look like me, but he does have my skill on guitar. He could be that good.

In fact we are now employing Justis and his schoolmate Skip Sellery (not a dietary suggestion) at the studio full-time. One of the perks of this is that I am reading the classic Frankenstein by Mary Shelley. You see, I love my son so much that I wanted to read this story, so that we could go over it together; it is summer reading that they had to have done before school reconvened for 12th grade. This is an area that I am so proud of Justis; in that he has surpassed me in school and the fact that he is going to be even smarter than I am is frightening.

On top of that, Justis' friend's family is on a bit of down luck and the son is going to work to help the family. I decided I am putting him through this tutoring each day too - thanks to your gracious support of our music and merchandise.

Thank you so much for this.

Tomorrow I am going to spend the day with an old friend and I just pray that I don't do anything too terribly dumb, I mean it takes a ‘certain type of stupid' to invite a friend out to hang and then ruin it, am I right? But this is an area that I do good in - messing up relationships.

My wife is in Spain, my daughter is with her, my son is out on the town because he just got paid, and we are going to formally start several types of training for Justis and his work-buddy; the aforementioned tutoring, money classes (taught by me since I was licensed to work for CitiGroup as a stockbroker), several studio courses - one of which will be teaching them how to assist in the Academy of Metal that we are starting up, and the fine art of audio engineering, which is a very heavy and expensive course, but one that I want to provide for my son, for his friend, and then to start a course facillitated by our studio and staff to teach from beginners on up to professionals (it helps if I am a little bigger than they are even if they are pro - that way they will listen).

This is after I finish approving my autobiography, which I read over a dozen chapters today and I was really happy with it. Of course there are a lot of harsh things that I say in the book, but at the end of each section, there is a tremendously human side of me that I haven't ever seen. It showed how even after I ruined so many relationships, it showed how a contrite heart, a humble spirit, a sincere apology and the effort not to do the same thing to the same person again, and you will be surprised at how forgiving people are. I WANT EVERY ONE TO KNOW THAT THE STORIES ARE TOLD AS THEY WENT DOWN, AND THE EPILOGUE IS THAT I AM TRULY GRATEFUL FOR MY NEW ATTITUDE, AND FOR ANY OF THE RELATIONSHIPS THAT WERE SALVAGEABLE.

I got purdy damn adept at handing over those olive branches.

So, until I get completely swamped again tomorrow morning, while trying to develop TheLIVELine, trying to grow my wife's coffee business, proofing my book, setting up my radio station, designing the stage for our next tour, and preparing for the next rehearsal which will no doubt involve a dump truck full o' problems all over again.

I love you guys all so very much and thanks again for the prayers, thank for the positive thoughts, even thank to the f*ckers who wanted me to stay hurt - I am healing to spite you, ya bastards!

So until next month, meaning tomorrow..."

The release of 2009's Endgame brings with it a startling realization: if first-generation thrash metal fans had been polled about which of the genre's "Big Four" — Metallica, Slayer, Anthrax, and Megadeth — would prove to be the most resilient and consistently prolific over the next quarter century, the only sure-fire consensus would probably have been "well, anyone but Megadeth!" And yet, 12 studio albums and 150-plus songs later — more than any of the other three have managed — that's exactly what's come to pass. It hasn't been easy, and it's rarely been pretty along the way, but despite a few weak efforts, mostly self-inflicted controversy, and no end to verbal diarrhea, none of those other platinum-busting thrash titans have been as productive as Dave Mustaine's bunch — all of which stands as a testament to the man's stubborn drive to prolong Megadeth's career against all odds, including drug abuse, his unfulfilled vengeance against Metallica, and even a religious reawakening! Of course, one shouldn't overlook the fact that Megadeth have always been a band in name only, thus allowing their leader to cope with voices of dissent by simply showing them the door. The "group" was also broken up for a short spell in the early 2000s while Mustaine recovered from nerve damage to his hands, after which he struggled with inspiration, creative direction, and a never-ending parade of henchmen before finally recovering much of that old Megadeth "mojo" (sonically, lyrically, and even where the cover art was concerned) on 2007's effective return to form, United Abominations. Best of all, this momentum carries on into Mustaine and company's second release for Roadrunner, Endgame, whose title apparently refers to "coming full circle" rather than any sort of goodbye, and finds the latest iteration of Megadeth — debuting new guitarist Chris Broderick(ex-Nevermore, Jag Panzer) — working primarily within their technical thrash comfort zone (think Peace Sells through Rust in Peace), with only a few latter-day elements and rare experimental diversions.

As such, deceptively simple guitar-shredding master classes like "This Day We Fight!," "1,320" (surprisingly, written about "funny car" racing), and first single "Headcrusher" are cut from the same bloody cloth as "Wake Up Dead" and "Set the World Afire," while politicized rants such as "44 Minutes," "Bite the Hand That Feeds," and the title cut recall old stalwarts like "Peace Sells" and "Holy Wars." And for those who enjoyed Megadeth's early-'90s shift away from incessant thrashing toward the more "civilized" (but pre-sellout) Countdown to Extinction and Youthanasia albums, there are more methodical and melodically sweetened cuts like "Bodies Left Behind," "How the Story Ends," and "The Right to Go Insane." Indeed, the only song here that breaks entirely from vintage Megadeth templates is the elaborately named "The Hardest Part of Letting Go...Sealed with a Kiss," which surely owes its orchestrated string backdrops to the European metal perspective afforded by producer Andy Sneap, and tells a "love story" about entombing one's beloved behind a brick wall à la Edgar Allan Poe's The Cask of Amontillado. This one anomaly notwithstanding, however, Endgame is arguably the least commercially concerned Megadeth album since Rust in Peace some 20 years earlier, and by touching on so many of the favored songwriting styles of those early years, it should not only give their typically opinionated fan base very little to kvetch and moan about, but also throw new fuel upon the flames of Megadeth's unlikely longevity.
